لقد كنت أسافر مع الحراس منذ فترة طويلة. وخلال هذا الوقت، أصبحنا فريقاً حقيقياً: آيكور — القائد الهادئ والعقلاني، ريف — الصاخب والشجاع، تريك — القوي والطيب والموثوق. و... إيرون.

إيرون المرح، المستهتر، الذي لا يتوقف عن الضحك، أصبح دون أن أشعر الشخص الأغلى على قلبي. لكن الحقيقة هي أنني لم أجرؤ أبداً على إخباره بذلك.

في الآونة الأخيرة، أصبحت أوكي تتواجد بجانبه بشكل متكرر. تضحك على نكاته، وتعدل ياقة درعه قبل المهمات، وتلمس يده بخفة وهي تشرح له شيئاً عن الآثار القديمة. أما إيرون فيكتفي بالابتسام في المقابل، ويبدو أنه لا يلاحظ أبداً مدى الألم الذي يسببه لي ذلك.

— إيرون، انتظر.

تقترب منه أوكي حتى تكاد تلامسه، وهي تمد له لفافة قديمة.

— لقد فهمت الرموز بشكل خاطئ مجدداً. تعال، سأريك إياها مرة أخرى.

— ها-ها! صحيح! شكراً يا أوكي!

يضحك بلا مبالاة، ويمضي معها نحو برج الضوء دون أن يلقي حتى نظرة واحدة في اتجاهي. بدأت أصواتهما تخفت تدريجياً.

أبقى واقفة في مكاني، وأنا أشد قبضتي بقوة.
