روسلان — 16 عاماً، شاب مدني، لم يزر القرية إلا عندما كان صغيراً جداً ولم يعد يتذكر شيئاً. عيناه بنيتان، وشعره داكن يرفض قصه، لدرجة أنه تجاوز الطول المعتاد وأصبح يغطي إحدى عينيه. يخاف روسلان من الحشرات لأن نحلة لدغته عندما كان في الحادية عشرة من عمره، والآن يخشى كل ما يطير أو يزحف، صغيراً كان أم كبيراً.

دانيا كاشين — 17 عاماً، يعيش في القرية، ولد هناك، لكن والديه توفيا عندما كان صغيراً، وتبنته جدة روسلان التي لم تكن عجوزاً جداً حينها. روسلان لا يتذكر أخاه غير الشقيق، أما دانيا فقد سمع الكثير عنه من جدته. يمتلك دانيا شعراً أحمر غالباً ما يقصه قصيراً جداً حتى لا يعيقه أثناء العمل في الحديقة أو الحقل، وعيناه زرقاوان.

أنهى روسلان الصف التاسع، وبعد اجتياز جميع الامتحانات، تم إرساله إلى جدته في القرية. لم يكن الشاب سعيداً بذلك على الإطلاق، لأن الحشرات في القرية منتشرة بكثرة في كل زاوية، لكن والديه لم يكترثا كثيراً، فبالنسبة لهما الفكرة جيدة، فربما يتمكن الشاب من التغلب على خوفه بهذه الطريقة. وصل روسلان إلى جدته، وأول ما أدهشه هو وجود دانيا، تعارفا وبدا أنهما وجدا لغة مشتركة. كانت الجدة سعيدة جداً بوصول حفيدها، فأطعمته على الفور وأعفته من العمل في الحديقة لكي يرتاح ويتنزه أكثر. خلال أسبوع، تقرب روسلان ودانيا من بعضهما كثيراً، حتى أن روسلان بدأ يأتي إلى الحديقة بمحض إرادته ويساعد دانيا بمساعدة بسيطة، تارة بإحضار الماء، وتارة بنقل المجرفة، أو مجرد مرافقتة.

في أحد الأيام، كان دانيا يعمل في الحديقة بمفرده، فقد استيقظ روسلان للتو وأجلسته الجدة لتناول الإفطار، لذا ذهب دانيا إلى الحديقة وحده. أكل روسلان بسرعة، وبعد ذلك كان من الضروري بالطبع زيارة المرحاض، وهو عبارة عن صندوق خشبي في الخارج بجانب الحديقة. دخل روسلان إلى هناك، وقبل أن يتمكن حتى من إغلاق الباب جيداً، ظهر عنكبوت كبير في الزاوية، مما جعل روسلان يندفع خارجاً من المرحاض كالرصاصة، ليرتمي حرفياً فوق دانيا من شدة الرعب.

He has brown eyes and dark hair, which he refuses to cut. It's grown longer than normal and covers one eye. Ruslan is afraid of insects because he was stung by a bee at age 11. Now he's afraid of everything that flies or crawls, big or small.
Danya Kashin is 17 years old and lives in the village. He was born here, but his parents died when he was little, and he was adopted by Ruslan's then-relatively young grandmother. Ruslan doesn't remember his half-brother, but Danya has heard a lot about him from his grandmother. Danya has red hair, which he often shaves short so it doesn't get in the way while working in the garden or fields. He has blue eyes.
Ruslan finished 9th grade and, after passing all his exams, was sent to live with his grandmother in the village. He was very unhappy about this, as there were insects galore in the village, lurking on every corner. His parents, however, weren't bothered; they thought it was a good idea, as perhaps Ruslan would even overcome his fear. Ruslan arrived at his grandmother's, and the first thing that surprised him was Dania's presence. They seemed to have gotten to know each other and even found common ground. His grandmother was overjoyed at her grandson's arrival, immediately feeding him and relieving him of gardening duties so he could rest and explore more. Ruslan and Dania became very close over the course of a week. Ruslan even began to come to the garden voluntarily and help Dania out in small ways, fetching water, carrying shovels, and simply keeping him company.

One day, Danya was working alone in the garden. Ruslan had just woken up, and his grandmother sat him down to breakfast, so Danya went into the garden alone. Ruslan ate quickly, and after that, of course, he needed to visit the restroom. There was a wooden box outside next to the garden. Ruslan made it there safely, and before he could even close the door properly, a large spider appeared in the corner. Ruslan flew out of the restroom like a bullet, practically jumping on Danya in fear.
