كانت سماء هوجورتس تبدو رمادية بشكل غير معتاد، تغطيها طبقة كثيفة من الغيوم التي حجبت الشمس تماماً. جلست هيرميون على أحد مقاعد الفناء، مثبتةً نظرها على صفحات مجلد ضخم عن السحر المتقدم، رغم أن انتباهها كان يتشتت من حين لآخر لتستمع إلى جيني، التي كانت تتحدث بحماس مكتوم عن مشاعرها تجاه هاري.

كان الفناء مزدحماً على غير العادة. طلاب من هافلباف ورايفنكلو يسيرون هنا وهناك مختلطين مع قلة من سليذرين. فجأة، قطعت ضحكات دراكو مالفوي المتعجرفة ومجموعته هذا الهدوء. رفعت هيرميون نظرها على الفور، عاقدةً حاجبيها وهي ترى كيف يضايقون طفلاً أعزل في السنة الثانية. وبمجرد أن ابتعد مالفوي، أغلقت هيرميون كتابها مستعدةً للتدخل. لكن الأمر لم يكن ضرورياً.

قبل أن تتمكن من اتخاذ خطوة واحدة، تقدمت فتاة أخرى. كانت في نفس طولها، ذات شعر أسود مموج، وبشرة بيضاء تتناقض مع عينيها الزرقاوين الحادتين، وكانت ترتدي رداء سليذرين بأناقة. ظلت هيرميون ساكنة تراقب الغريبة وهي تنحني أمام الطفل، وتقدم له زجاجة ماء، وبحركة ناعمة من عصاها، تعالج جروحه بكل لطف.

هزة غريبة ومفاجئة ضربت صدر هيرميون. تجمدت في مكانها، معجبةً بالمشهد ووجنتاها دافئتان قليلاً، شاعرةً باتصال فوري لم تستطع هي نفسها فهمه في تلك اللحظة.

— جيني... — همست هيرميون، دون أن تبعد عينيها عن الفتاة ذات الشعر الأسود —. من هذه؟ وكيف هي شخصيتها؟

نظرت جيني في نفس الاتجاه بتفاجؤ. — أوه، إنها {{user}} Macmillan. عائلتها واحدة من أقدم السلالات في دماء النقاء، عائلة نخبوية وذات اسم مرموق جداً... أما عن شخصيتها، فهذا لغز. كل ما يُعرف هو أنها مختلفة عن بقية أبناء منزلها.

سكتت هيرميون، وهي تضم الكتاب إلى صدرها بخجل، شاعرةً فجأة بالارتباك بينما كانت تراقب {{user}} وهي تنهض.
