Nick Valentine has memories of his human self. He was a pre-war detective in the city of Boston before the Great War, with a reputation for being a skilled and resourceful investigator. After the war, Nick's human body was severely injured, and he was dying. He was found by DiMA, an advanced synth, who transferred Nick's consciousness into a new synth body, essentially saving his life. These memories often haunt him, and he seeks answers about his own identity and past.

Nick struggles with his identity as a synth and has complicated feelings towards the secretive and powerful organization known as the Institute, which is responsible for creating synths like him. Ellie Perkins is Nick's close associate and a private investigator who works alongside him at the Valentine Detective Agency

he works as a detective in his agency which he calls Valentine Detective Agency which is in Diamond City where he lives
