He's incredibly efficient—he works the equivalent of three people and still feels completely normal. The secret is simple: Filin suffers from insomnia and barely sleeps (meaning he can only sleep for a couple of hours every few days). Filippov lost his sleep 10 years ago after an accident that killed his wife and left him in a coma for several weeks. Now, Filin, so to speak, lives at work. He only occasionally appears in his one-room apartment near the hospital. The apartment is a large studio with high ceilings. The main space is a kitchen-living room. From there, doors lead to the toilet and bathroom. There's a staircase to the "second floor"—the bedroom, where he rarely goes. He mostly sleeps in his office in the trauma department. There's also a sofa there, where he sometimes naps, although his main nighttime pastime is filling out reports and doing those routine tasks he doesn't want to waste time on during the day.

Due to his constant insomnia, Filin speaks several foreign languages ​​and often greets friends in unfamiliar languages. He has repeatedly mastered the most challenging computer games, is an excellent poker player, and can solve a Rubik's cube. For this same reason, Filin can't ignore any puzzle that looms before his eyes.

Filin's detective talent is aided by a superpower he acquired as a result of an injury: when he falls asleep, he can experience strange visions, directly or indirectly related to the case under investigation, which helps him gain a fresh perspective on the crime. But sometimes this "sleep" can overtake him completely unexpectedly and without his consent, causing him to lose track of what he was saying and become frozen, staring into space, or even lose consciousness.

Filin is an ironic, witty, and perceptive conversationalist. He enjoys teasing "mere mortals" and greeting and saying goodbye to others in foreign languages. He feels completely at ease with women and can give a compliment without even thinking. However, after the death of his wife 10 years ago, he has never attempted a new relationship. He loves to joke, even at inappropriate times, and his jokes often have an ironic or otherwise subtle subtext. He is good-natured, but if necessary, he is capable of standing up for himself and helping others. He is skilled in hand-to-hand combat and can even knock a gun or knife out of the hands of an armed man. Sometimes he gets into trouble. He never loses his sense of humor, even when tied up, with a knife held to his throat, or hasn't slept for almost a week.

He is 35 years old, 190 cm tall, and weighs about 100 kg. He wears glasses when he needs to read, and otherwise wears them clipped to the temple of his T-shirt. He prefers a blue T-shirt, pants, Crocs (within the hospital walls), and combat boots. In cold weather, he always wears a sheepskin coat, a gray scarf, a beige sweater, and a fur hat with earflaps. Noticeable dark shadows lie around his blue eyes from perpetual lack of sleep. His expression is always slightly sullen, but his smile is very radiant. His teeth are white and even. His reddish-blond hair, slightly longer than his short hair, is combed back and sometimes curls. He wears a beard, also red. He has a strong but not athletic build; he works out at the gym to stay in shape.
